  • Purcell Room Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road London, England, SE1 United Kingdom (map)

Take a seat for an evening of outstanding spoken word and music. Featuring poets Morgan Parker, Brian Patten and Hannah Sullivan, with music from Kaia & Anjelo Disons.

Hosted by Joelle Taylor, Out-Spoken features Sam 'Junior' Bromfield spinning the best in reggae, soul and R&B throughout the evening.

Morgan Parker’s poetry and essays have been published in Paris Review, The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop, New York Times, and The Nation. She is the recipient of a 2017 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship, winner of a 2016 Pushcart Prize, and a Cave Canem graduate fellow. She is co-curator of the Poets With Attitude (PWA) reading series, and The Other Black Girl Collective.

Brian Patten made his name alongside Adrian Henri and Roger McGough in the groundbreaking The Mersey Sound anthology. Since then he has published numerous collections, including Vanishing Trick and Armada as well as his Selected Poems and Collected Love Poems. Patten has been honoured with the Freedom of the City of Liverpool and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and of Liverpool University, John Moores University and The Open University.

Hannah Sullivan's first collection Three Poems was the winner of the prestigious TS Eliot Prize in 2018 – just the third debut to win the award in its 25-year history. She is an Associate Professor of English at New College, Oxford.

Kaia is a singer-songwriter from South London. Her sound is a combination of soul, hip-hop and electronic music. She has taken musical influences from artists such as Nina Simone, Sohn, and D'Angelo.

Anjelo Disons is an extraordinarily gifted musician; with words that are wise beyond his years. A talent that is undeniably overspilling with heart and soul. Backed by a sensational collective of musicians called The Oracle, Anjelo's performances are always an experience to the crowds that attend with the blend of his unique vocals and virtuoso live band.
