Out-Spoken Masterclass : September 2018

  • The Poetry Café 22 Betterton Street London, England, WC2H 9BX United Kingdom (map)

Out-Spoken's masterclasses are a chance to hone your writing and performance skills with some of the UK's finest poets at The Poetry Cafe.

September's masterclass facilitator will be Wayne Holloway-Smith. Wayne received his PhD in English and Creative Writing from Brunel University in 2015. His debut collection of poetry, Alarum, was published by Bloodaxe Books in 2017, and was a Poetry Book Society guest selector’s choice, and shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry Prize and the Roehampton Poetry Prize. He won the Poetry Society’s Geoffrey Dearmer Prize in 2016.

We have all experienced the restrictions of the English language, as it is used in the everyday. I want to tell you I am sad, but there are so many types of sadness. How can I impress upon you the particularity of my specific experience of sadness at this moment, with only one catchall word on which to pin it? I cannot. Luckily, there is poetry, a second language, inside our English-speaking tongues, whose logic is skewed, different, wonky. This workshop will experiment with rules of this wonkiness, and the dramatic and imaginative leaps of association encompassed within, in the making of alternative meaning.

The masterclass is open to all ages and abilities. Participants are only expected to bring their own writing utensils, a notepad/tablet/laptop.
